Churachandpur… One Year Later
Let’s talk about what’s been happening in Churachandpur, our beautiful village nestled among lush green hills in Manipur, India since May of 2023. We all know that the ongoing violence and conflict in the region have taken a toll on the community. Families have been displaced, livelihoods disrupted, and uncertainty continues to loom over the people.
To understand the challenges faced by the people of Churachandpur, we need to look at the historical and political context of Manipur’s unrest. Reports from sources like The Guardian paint a vivid picture of the complex dynamics driving the violence — political tensions, ethnic divisions, and struggles for autonomy.
Churachandpur, once a vibrant hub of local culture, now bears the scars of conflict. Families have had to leave their homes, seeking shelter in refugee camps. Over 30,000 displaced people now call these camps home. The local economy has suffered, leaving many without stable incomes. The psychological impact of living in fear is tangible among our villagers.
Amidst these hardships, For One Life continues to be a beacon of hope. We continue to be committed to uplifting Churachandpur through sustainable initiatives.
One of our new projects is the weaving initiative. This project not only revives traditional handicrafts but also provides income and empowerment to local women. By harnessing their skills and creativity, we’re not just sustaining livelihoods but also fostering pride and resilience within our community.
Speaking with local leaders and beneficiaries, you’ll find a profound sense of hope. “Despite the challenges, initiatives like the weaving project give us hope for a better future”, as our International Director Michael Esh puts it.
Tom Eby, a For One Life staff member currently in Churachandpur has the following story to tell:
“The Kingdom Kids Team is 95% volunteers. I recently found out that one of our volunteers is also a displaced person. Last summer she and her family fled their village and are now residing here in Churachandpur. After hearing about Kingdom Kids from one of her neighbors she was extremely motivated to join and help out.
Now It is like a full circle moment as we are doing the program in a village made up entirely of displaced people and she is one herself. It’s a testament to the goodness of God because she is now only seen with a smile on her face full of joy and happiness.”
Yes, the road ahead is tough. Violence and conflict still pose daily challenges. But we’re determined to assist in the rebuilding process. For One Life stands firm in its mission to support the people of Churachandpur on their journey towards recovery.
Looking ahead, we’re optimistic. For One Life is moving forward with past projects aimed at sustainable development and empowerment in Churachandpur such as the Community Life Center and the Poultry Project. We invite you to continue with us in this journey of hope, where every action brings us closer to a brighter tomorrow for the people of Churachandpur.
